A memorandum on the future of the creative ecosystem in Europe

Abstract of the presentation:
“The memorandum, developed by 15 participants, is born out of the conviction that legislators will enact more informed and more adequate regulation is provided with independent, publicly funded expertise; cross-fertilisation between the academic and the political realm is urgently needed. With the memorandum, we would like to put a new copyright narrative up for discussion, both in the academic, and in the political sphere. The ten theses concern the world as is, the world as could be, and the means needed to turn this possible future into reality. We believe that this narrative would be a promising starting point for creating something that is not only highly attractive but also urgently needed –: better copyright regulation by 2030.”
Professor Dr. Michael Grünberger, LL.M. (NYU) holds the Chair of Civil, Commercial and Technology Law at the University of Bayreuth. His research focuses on intellectual property law, private law in the European multi-level system (especially digitalisation and on discrimination) and legal theory. For his thesis about the rights of performing artists “Das Interpretenrecht” (“Performers’ Rights”) the Faculty of Law of the University of Cologne awarded him the first prize for outstanding scientific achievements in 2006. His habilitation “Personale Gleichheit. Der Grundsatz der Gleichbehandlung im Zivilrecht” (“Personal Equality. The Principle of Non- Discrimination in Civil Law”) was elected a legal book of the year by one of the most widely read German law journals “JuristenZeitung” (JZ) in 2014. The main focus of his current publications is on European and German copyright law.
Michael Grünberger is Director of the Institute of Copyright and Media Law in Munich. He was spokesman of the Research Group for Intellectual Property and the Public Domain at the University of Bayreuth before he became Director of the Bayreuth Research Center for Intellectual Property, the Public Domain and Competition.
